Northern Horse Blog

Welcome to the Northern Horse Blog

Fjord horse mare and foal After a fair amount of deliberation, I’ve decided that the totem for this blog should be the Norwegian Fjord horse. To me this breed, more than any other symbolizes the northern horse.

The Fjord is one of the oldest pure breeds in existence, having remained pure and uncrossed for 3000 years. Excavations of viking sites have shown that this horse has been domesticated for more than two millenia.

In size Fjords are part-way between ponies and full-sized horses, but they are very strong, agile and trainable and they are always called horses. They are equally suited for driving and riding. For these reasons they are very popular throughout northern Europe, although they are fairly rare in North America where we seem to favor the larger breeds.

What is this blog going to focus on? Almost anything to do with enjoying and partnering with the northern horse. To begin with, the focus will mainly be on activities and facilities in what we call the Lower Mainland, since I live in Maple Ridge, the horse capitol of British Columbia. The north in the blog title Northern Horse Blog is relative I guess. We are south of Alaska and the Yukon, but north of the US. Eventually, I would like to expand this blog all the way up to Dawson Creek, then it will really be a Northern Horse Blog.

So, I hope you come back to see how this blog is developing. There will be some dynamite content here soon to amuse and edify you. There is a link at the bottom of each post labelled ‘Sphere related content’. Clicking the small blue symbol will bring up content from other blogs that relate to the topic of the post you are reading.

See you soon.
